God has recently been showing me about a defining characteristic of his: fatherhood. But what is wrapped up in this idea of fatherhood? One aspect of good and true fatherhood is consistency: a father is someone who you can rely on because he's not going to be constantly changing.
I'll start with a passage which emphasizes God's consistency.
I love You, Lord, my strength.
The Lord is my rock,
my fortress, and my deliverer,
my God, my mountain where I seek refuge,
my shield and the horn of my salvation,
my stronghold.
I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise,
and I was saved from my enemies. (Psalm 18:1-3)
The words rock, fortress, mountain, and stronghold are all places we go that we know we'll be safe; they'll always be there. If your footing is unsure, standing on a solid rock is just the remedy you need. If your enemies are chasing you down, you need a fortress. You always know what their properties or characteristics are: they are consistent, unchanging and long lasting. So too, God is unchangeable and this very characteristic makes him the place to run to.
One of the last things I learned at my last job is that the grocery chain Aldi typically requires a three-year contract with each of their vendors. Aldi sets the specifications for the product, and when a manufacturer is selected they get a three-year contract, which is very long in the retail industry. What this means for the manufacturer is that they can plan their expenses much farther out, and thus sell the products at lower price. Aldi's consistency provides a solid footing and safe place where manufacturers can excel.
My childhood was blessed with the presence of a father who provided a consistent and safe environment. My dad had, and still has, a steady job and was responsible with money, meaning we didn't have to worry about food or shelter. He's a kind-natured, soft-spoken man, so neither my brother nor I ever worried about a explosive temper. My earthly dad's consistency is an example of who our Heavenly Father is: kind, consistent, patient, loving, and responsible. So I'm thankful that my dad both raised me and my brother right and for showing us a glimpse of the Father of all comfort.
